If pressure is low, check the fuel filter and hoses, and if needed, replace the fuel pressure regulator or check the fuel pump.

Listen for a whirring sound at the fuel filler opening when turning the ignition key to the On position.

Run the engine and check for leaks.

To test the fuel pressure, disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and install a T-fitting. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the T-fitting using a section of fuel hose. Start the engine and let it idle, ensuring that the pressure on the gauge remains constant and returns to zero slowly when the engine is turned off.

Unbolt the fuel tank straps and lower the tank partially. Disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector from the fuel pump assembly, and remove the assembly from the tank by tapping the locking ring counterclockwise. Replace the old lock ring gasket and clean or install the new strainer if necessary. Separate the fuel pump from the assembly by removing the clamp and disconnecting the electrical connector. Clean the mounting surfaces and seal ring groove before installing the new pump.

The system pressure is checked both with and without the engine running.

You can disconnect the electrical connector for the fuel level sending unit and turn on the ignition key to check the gauge operation. Use a test light to find the terminal with battery voltage and ground the terminal without voltage to test the gauge response.

Discard the old O-ring seal.

If the readings are incorrect, replace the sending unit. A more accurate check can be made by removing it from the fuel tank and checking its resistance while manually operating the float arm.
