Ford Bronco II Throttle Position Sensor

In Ford Bronco II, the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is used for controlling the ratio of air to fuel supply by adjusting the position of the trottle valve. With the help of the Throttle Position Sensor, signals concerning the position of this component are sent to fuel injection system to fulfill real-time instructions to the engine computer in relation to the amount of fuel delivery seen by power wanted from the engine. This feedback loop takes place several times per second to allow for seamless acceleration, maintaining speed and to decelerate. Ford Bronco II models are known to have adopted both amperometric and the contemporary non-contact Throttle Position Sensor systems. Previous generations of sensors used 'touch' and changes in electrical resistance, nowadays these designs use Hall, inductive or magnetoresistive approaches which increase their efficiency and reliability. The Throttle Position Sensor, now a non-contact part of the electronic throttle control system together with the accelerator pedal sensors, enhances the accuracy of the system and hence the efficiency of the Bronco II's engine management system.

Ford Bronco II Throttle Position Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What is the purpose of the Throttle Position (TP) sensor on Ford Bronco II?
A: The Throttle Position (TP) sensor is a potentiometer that gives a signal to the PCM which is proportional to the throttle plate position. It observes the movements of the throttle plate and sends an electrical signal to the PCM thereby adjusting for air/fuel mixture, spark timing, and EGA operation. To check the TP sensor, disconnect the battery and touch the DVOM leads to terminals. Rotate the throttle shaft and watch the ohmmeter for even resistance. The TP sensor has malfunctions if it produces irregular readings. Using a breakout box, measure the voltage between terminals 89 and 90. If it exceeds the standard value, inspect the wiring or replace the TP sensor. To remove/replace the TP sensor, disconnect the battery, remove mounting screws, and locate the sensor against the throttle body housing.
