Ford Excursion Ignition Coil

The Ford Excursion Ignition Coil is an important part that maintains a significance place in a vehicles ignition system. Transforming the low voltage of electrical current from the battery to the high voltage power, ignition coil creates the spark which is required to fire up the fuel in the combusting chambers of an engine. It is done through the primary and secondary winding of insulated copper wire on an iron core mounted in the coil case. The primary circuit is for the battery and triggering device, while the secondary circuit creates the high voltage used on the spark plugs. The Ford Excursion vehicles have applied many types of the ignition coils since production on the basis of distributor ignition, and coil-on-plug, and coil-near-plug systems. These various styles present distinct ways of providing the voltage to the spark plugs and some of them even provide each cylinder with its own coil. Deterioration of the ignition coil can cause the engine to misfire, produce low power and compromised fuel efficiency and therefore, ought to be checked regularly to ensure the vehicle is in proper working order.

Ford Excursion Ignition Coil Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install ignition coils on a Ford Excursion?
A: Disconnect the cable(s) from the negative battery terminal(s). Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector(s) from each individual coil. Use tape and mark each electrical connector with the correct cylinder number to prevent mix-ups during reassembly, if necessary. Remove the bolt securing the ignition coil, then pull the coil from the cylinder head. Note: 2006 and later models have individual coils for each spark plug. The coils are mounted to the top of the valve covers. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure with the following additions: Prior to installing the coil, coat the entire interior of the rubber boot with silicone dielectric compound. Connect each coil electrical connector to its correct coil and make sure they are tight and secure.
  • Q: How do you clean and inspect ignition coils on Ford Excursion?
A: First of all, the coils should be wiped clean with a damp cloth and left to dry completely. Look for any cracks, damage or carbon tracking on each coil. Be certain that the coil fits tightly on the Spark Plug. Replace the coil if it is damaged. To get to the spark plugs, you have to take out the ignition coil, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the coil retaining screw. Pull straight up and out to remove the coil.
