- Q: How to remove and install the intake manifold in gasoline engine on Ford Excursion?A: The intake manifold of some models is constructed in two parts, the lower part can be accessed only after complete removal of manifold from the engine, in which located the Intake Manifold Tuning Valve. In the more recent models, the manifold is integrated construct in that it forms a single unit. For V8 engines start by relieving fuel system pressure and then turning off the battery (disconnecting the negative terminal), then proceeding to drain out the cooling system and finally the removal of the intake air housing and intake duct. Remove several hoses and cables and several electrical connectors such as the throttle position sensor, idle air control and so on. Extra procedures for the 1999-2004 two-valve models are to remove EGR system hoses and wires and to unbolt the throttle body spacer. As for 2005 and later three-valve models, do away with the heater hose and other sensors. Tighten the upper intake manifold bolts gradually and raise the manifold, it is advisable to have all bolts out to avoid damaging some of them. Lower intake manifolds require loosening of the bolts that join the upper and the lower sections and in cases where the gasket is worn out or damaged, this should be replaced. Before installing clean certain areas without abrasives, fit new gaskets and tighten bolts in proper pattern. For v10 engines the same procedure applies to removal and installation just be sure to disconnect everything and double check for leaks when reassembling.
