Ford Fairmont Ignition Lock Cylinder

The contribution of the Ignition Lock Cylinder in Ford Fairmont is to provide the key turn in operation to start the vehicle's engine. This component is located within the ignition switch that distributes battery power to the appropriate circuit depending on the key used. The Ignition Lock Cylinder of the Ford Fairmont has come under redesigning over the years with the earlier models having the traditional key procedures while the later models had coded keys which locked out the cylinders even if the key was chopped off. In any case, the Ignition Lock Cylinder is not immune to wear, and this results to hard time twisting the key or even starting the engine. It can be as simple as the keys or the tumblers wearing out or it can be the defect that may be present in the ignition switch. The Ford Fairmont's ignition system is more understandable and focused on convenience and safety of the vehicle, which evolved from basic components to modern units with advanced elements embedded in the design of the automobile, such as, for instance, anti-theft features. In all, the Ignition Lock Cylinder is still one of the components on the Ford Fairmont vehicle that plays an important role in the running and protection of the car.

Ford Fairmont Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and install a lock cylinder on Ford Fairmont?
A: Pull the horn pad, then unscrew the ground cable and take off the steering wheel and the column trim shroud. With an automatic transmission select the Park position for the selector lever and with a manual transmission select the reverse gear for the selector lever and set the ignition switch to RUN. Chuck a wire pin or a small drift punch ¼ inch (3 mm) diameter through the casting hole down to the middle of the Ignition Lock Cylinder housing. To take out the lock cylinder, one is required to press the wire pin while at the same time pulling it up. For installation the lock cylinder should be placed at the RUN position and the retaining pin should be pressed down before being placed as the cylinder into its housing with the interlocking washer. Twist the key until it reaches the off position so as to be able to advance the cylinder retaining pin to the hole at the cylinder housing. Activate the switch to ensure proper functioning by rotating the key through all positions and then the steering wheel, pad and column shroud were fitted and the battery ground connected.
