Q: How to replace a speedometer according to U.S Federal law on Ford Fairmont?
A: U.S Federal law mandates that the mileage on a replacement speedometer must match the mileage on the removed speedometer. To replace the speedometer, start by disconnecting the battery negative cable. Then, remove the Instrument Cluster and, if applicable, the clock reset knob and retainer. Take out the screws holding the mask and lens to the backplate and remove them. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the back of the speedometer. After removing the attaching screws, take out the speedometer from the cluster. To reinstall, place the speedometer in the backplate and secure it with the retaining screws. Apply silicone damping grease to the speedometer drive hole. Put the mask and lens back in position and secure them with the attaching screws. If applicable, reinstall the clock reset knob and retainer. Finally, install the instrument cluster and reconnect the battery negative cable.
