Ford Mustang Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the TR sensor on Ford Mustang?
A: For up to 2010 model year, the TR sensor is positioned on the left side of the transmission, with transmission having to be lowered slightly because of the close proximity of the sensor to the transmission tunnel. Whenever it is necessary to replace the TR sensor or if the sensor is removed to make way for a new or rebuilt transmission, the use of a special alignment tool 307-351 is required. Lever the shift lever into neutral, remove the negative battery cable, properly jack up the vehicle and safely support it, remove the crossmember and lower the transmission somewhat so that you can reach the TR sensor. Remove the electrical connector and shift control cable from the manual control lever; if reinstalling the same sensor, mark the position. As for the new sensors the proper alignment can only be done with this special tool. This may be shifted to some other position, so make certain that guide the manual selector shaft is in direction to Neutral before the installation of the sensor. Bolt in the TR sensor, with the alignment marks if you're using the original sensor, otherwise use the alignment tool if a new one is used and tighten the mounting bolts. The process of installation again is the reverse of the removal process. The TR sensor for 2011 and later models consists of Hall-effect sensors contained within the valve body; replacement should be done by a dealer or a qualified repair facility because of the involved procedure.
