Ford Pinto Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove Power Steering Pump on Ford Pinto?
A: First there is the removal of the fluid from the reservoir using the following procedure; first, remove the fluid return hose from the reservoir and plug it where it was connected. Subsequently, release the pressure hose from the pump fitting but do not disconnect the fitting. Remove the pump mountings depending on their type and re-locate the pump to remove the drive belt from the pump pulley shaft. When the mountings have been disconnected, one can then take out the pump. When refitting, do the reverse, but be certain to recharge and bleed the system thoroughly. Add clean specified power steering fluid to the reservoir and then disconnect the primary (LT) wire from the negative terminal on the coil so that the engine does not start, now start the car using the starter motor. Watch the level of the fluid in the reservoir and pour in more until the level is constant. With the engine cranking, take the steering wheel and make a full clockwise then counter clockwise turn to ensure the front wheels are in contact with the ground. It is advisable to recheck the fluid level after some time and put some more in as required. Connect the coil wire again, switch on the engine and allow it to run for several minutes with the steering being turned from lock to lock, but not with the steering held in the full lock position. Last turn off the engine and check the indication on the dipstick and after that final check take some drops of fluid into your fingertip to feel the smoothness.
