Lincoln Town Car Idler Arm

The Idler Arm in Lincoln Town Car vehicles is an important element of the steering system and connects the centre link to one of the sides of the car frame. It offers the much needed swivel support especially on the passengers side and also helps to support the center link so as to maintain the right height as seen by the Pitman arm in order to enhance the performance of the steering system. In the course of use, the Idler Arm may wear out more than the Pitman arm because of its pivotal function; therefore, servicing is crucial. This also entails greasing any grease points using a grease gun at any time of oil changes to enhance the performance and durability of the vehicle. Taking care of the Idler Arm also improves the steering stability and also increases the life of the steering linkage in the Lincoln Town Cars.

Lincoln Town Car Idler Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to inspect and remove/install the Center Link,Idler Arm,Pitman Arm and Tie Rod for the Lincoln Town Car?
A: The steering linkage connects the steering gear to the wheels via the Pitman arm, idler arm, center link, and adjustable tie-rods. Check the idler arm for looseness by raising the vehicle's front and moving it up and down. Look for damaged components. For tie-rod removal, loosen the castle nut, detach the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle, and remove the nut. Replace the tie-rod end if needed and unscrew it. Detach the inner tie-rod end from the center link, lubricate the new tie-rod end, and screw it into the adjuster sleeve. Connect it to the steering knuckle, tighten the nut, and install a new cotter pin. Reconnect the tie-rod to the center link, tighten the clamp nuts, and reinstall the wheel. To replace the idler arm, remove it from the center link, detach the idler arm-to-frame bolts, and install a new assembly, tightening bolts. Insert the idler arm into the center link, tighten, and install a new nut.
