Q: How to remove and install a speedometer cable on Lincoln Town Car?
A: On later models, the speedometer is electric, with a signal provided by the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). On these models there is no mechanical speedometer cable. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission or cruise control speed sensor adapter. Models with cruise control adapters have two speedometer cables: one between the transmission and the adapter and one leading from the adapter to the speedometer housing. Detach the cable from the routing clips in the engine compartment and pull the cable up to provide enough slack to allow disconnection from the speedometer. Remove the Instrument Cluster screws, pull the cluster out, then reach behind it and disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the cluster by pressing on the cable release clip. Remove the cable from the vehicle. Prior to installation, press a 3/16-inch ball of silicone or equivalent lubricant Into the speedometer opening. Installation is the reverse of removal.
