Lincoln Town Car Wheel Cylinder

The Wheel Cylinder in Lincoln Town Car vehicles is part of the hydraulic drum brake system by applying pressure on the brake shoes to con to the brake drum and there by stopping the vehicle through friction. This component functioning in a similar way to a slave cylinder is designed with a plunger, pistons and rubber seals. Unlike earlier types that are developed using cast iron, the modern wheel cylinders are developed using aluminum primarily to resist rust and corrosion. A wheel cylinder may develop a leak, and this formation weakens the brake performance, and the only solution is either to replace the wheel cylinder or to reconstruct it. Coalescing of wheel cylinder usually includes cylinder, pistons, rubber cups, and a spring, while the mechanism of operation involves the pistons extending when brake pressure is presented, which in turn is used to press the shoes to the drum. Since wheel cylinders are core components of service brakes and parking brake, they require regular inspection and maintenance before it is too late for a safe and secure ride on the road.

Lincoln Town Car Wheel Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul a wheel cylinder on Lincoln Town Car?
A: If an overhaul is indicated, explore all options before beginning the job. New wheel cylinders are available, which makes this job quite easy. If it's decided to rebuild the wheel cylinder, make sure that a rebuild kit is available before proceeding. Never overhaul only one wheel cylinder always rebuild both of them at the same time. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling. Remove the Brake Shoe assembly. Remove all dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Disconnect the Brake Line. Don't pull the brake line away from the wheel cylinder. Remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts. Detach the wheel cylinder from the brake backing plate and place it on a clean workbench. Immediately plug the brake line to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Remove the bleeder screw, cups, pistons, boots and spring assembly from the wheel cylinder body. Clean the wheel cylinder with brake fluid, denatured alcohol or brake system cleaner. Use compressed air to remove excess fluid from the wheel cylinder and to blow out the passages. Make sure the compressed air is filtered and unlubricated. Check the cylinder bore for corrosion and score marks. Crocus cloth can be used to remove light corrosion and stains, but the cylinder must be replaced with a new one if the defects cannot be removed easily, or if the bore is scored. Lubricate the new cups with brake fluid. Assemble the brake cylinder components. Make sure the cup lips face in. Place the wheel cylinder in position, install the mounting bolts and tighten them to the torque listed in the specifications. Connect the brake line and install the brake shoe assembly. Bleed the brakes.
