Q: How to replace an ignition switch in a car on Mercury Cougar?
A: Disconnect negative cable from battery. Remove screws and detach lower steering column cover. Remove four nuts retaining steering column to bracket and lower column for access to switch screws. Remove upper steering column cover. Unplug ignition switch electrical connector. Turn ignition key lock cylinder to Run position. Remove two switch retaining screws. Disengage ignition switch from actuator pin. Ensure actuator pin slot in new ignition switch is in Run position. Place new switch on actuator pin and install retaining screws. Move switch back and forth to line up screw holes if necessary. Plug electrical connector into switch. Install upper steering column cover. Raise steering column and install retaining nuts. Tighten nuts securely. Remove any clips on steering column studs before installing nuts. Install steering lower column cover. Connect negative battery cable.
