Mercury Zephyr Air Filter

In Mercury Zephyr, vehicles the Air Filter has the function of guarding the engine from the dirt as well as other abrasive particles which may harm the engine. These filters need to be replaced after some time in order to ensure that it filters properly and the engine is able to perform to the optimum level. The air imports are enhanced to have the ability to capture dust particles of up to 5 microns for engine protection but with little hindrance to airflow. Depending upon the kind of engined used and the conditions under which the vehicle is driven paper, foam, oiled cotton gauze and stainless steel mesh types of air filters are employed. Performance air filters provide more air flow rate accompanied by better filtering ability with service interval of up to 50,000miles thus improving the power of the engine and fuel efficiency. Inspection and change of the air filter should be done often especially when the vehicle is used under off road or dusty environment.

Mercury Zephyr Air Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the air filter and crankcase emission filter on Mercury Zephyr?
A: At the specified intervals, the air filter and crankcase emission filter should be replaced with new ones. A thorough program of preventative maintenance would call for the two filters to be inspected periodically between changes. The air filter is located inside the air cleaner housing on the top of the engine. To remove the filter, unscrew the wing nut at the top of the air cleaner and lift off the top plate. If there are vacuum hoses connected to this plate, note their positions and disconnect them. While the top plate is off, be careful not to drop anything down into the carburetor. Lift the air filter out of the housing. To check the filter, hold it up to strong sunlight, or place a flashlight or drop light on the inside of the ring-shaped filter, if you can see light coming through the paper element, the filter is alright. Check all the way around the filter. Wipe the inside of the air cleaner clean with a rag. Place the old filter (if in good condition) or the new filter (if specified interval has elapsed) back into the air cleaner housing. Make sure it seats properly in the bottom of the housing. Connect any disconnected vacuum hoses to the top plate and reinstall the top plate with the wing nut. On nearly all cars the crankcase emission filter is also located inside the air cleaner housing. Remove the top plate as described previously and locate the filter on the side of the housing. Loosen the hose clamp at the end of the filter hose leading to the filter. Disconnect the hose from the filter. Remove the metal locking clip which secures the filter holder to the air cleaner housing. Pliers can be used for this. Remove the filter and plastic holder from the inside of the air cleaner. Remove the old filter pad from the container and wash the container in a suitable solvent. Lightly oil the new filter pad. Place the new filter assembly into position and install the metal locking clip on the outside of the air cleaner. Connect the filter hose and tighten the clamp around the end of the hose. Reinstall the air cleaner top plate and any vacuum hoses which were disconnected.
  • Q: How do you remove and install the air cleaner top plate and air filter element on Mercury Zephyr?
A: Remove the wing nut(s) attaching the air cleaner top plate to the air cleaner housing. Then, remove the air cleaner top and take out the Air Filter. Installation is the reverse of removal. On 2.3L air cleaners, recheck the torque on the first wing nut after tightening the second one.
