Use a telescoping gauge to measure the inside diameter of each camshaft bearing and record the results, taking two measurements at each bearing.

Install the hydraulic valve lifters in their original bores, making sure they are coated with engine assembly lube.

Look for score marks, pitting, galling, and evidence of overheating (blue, discolored areas). Look for flaking of the hardened surface of each lobe.

The remainder of the installation procedure is the reverse of removal. On models equipped with a camshaft position sensor, install it.

1. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and cam lobes with engine assembly lube. 2. Slide the camshaft into the engine, supporting it near the block to avoid scraping or nicking the bearings. 3. Coat both sides of the thrust plate with engine assembly lube, then install it so it covers the main oil gallery. Tighten the bolts to the torque.

Wipe off all surplus sealant to ensure none is left to find its way into any oil ways. Follow the sealant manufacturer's instructions for curing time, usually at least an hour before starting the engine.

Check that the roller on each lifter turns freely and shows no signs of pitting, scoring, or other wear. Check the pushrod seat in each lifter for wear. Also, make sure each lifter fits in its original bore without excessive looseness.

Draw the position of the lobes for the number one cylinder on your chart before carefully removing the camshafts.

Measure the major and minor diameters of each cam lobe using a micrometer or vernier caliper. Subtract each minor diameter from the major diameter to determine the lobe lift. Compare your measurement to the specified lobe lift.

Remove the camshaft seal and withdraw the camshaft, being very careful not to damage the camshaft bearings and journals as it's pulled out.

Measure the inside diameter of each camshaft bearing and record the results by taking two measurements, 90 degrees apart, at each bearing. Additionally, use a micrometer to measure the camshaft bearing journals to determine if they are excessively worn or out-of-round. If they are more than 0.005-inch out-of-round, the camshaft should be replaced.

a) Clean the bearing surfaces and camshaft journals with lacquer thinner or acetone. b) Carefully lay the camshaft(s) in place in the cylinder head without installing the rocker arms or lash adjusters and without lubrication. c) Lay a strip of Plastigage on each journal. d) Install the camshaft caps. e) Tighten the caps gradually to the specified torque. f) Remove the bolts and detach the caps. g) Compare the width of the crushed Plastigage to the scale on the Plastigage envelope to determine the oil clearance. h) If the clearance is greater than specified and any journal diameter is less than specified, replace the camshaft. If journal diameters are within specifications but oil clearance is too great, the cylinder head is worn and must be replaced.

Liberally coat the camshaft journals and bearings with engine assembly lube or moly-base grease, then carefully install the camshaft in the cylinder head.
