Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to position the keyway in the 9 o'clock position.

Measure the camshaft bearing journals with a micrometer to determine if they are excessively worn or out-of-round. If they are more than 0.001-inch out-of-round, the camshaft should be replaced with a new one.

The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Excessive cam follower wear, and possibly excessive camshaft lobe wear, may indicate a malfunction of the lubrication system. If more than one cam follower is excessively worn, both the camshaft and all the cam followers should be replaced.

1. Remove the camshaft cap bolts, starting with the front camshaft bearing cap on 5.0L engines. 2. Loosen the bearing cap bolts only 1/4-turn at a time, following the reverse of the tightening sequence, until they can be removed by hand. 3. Lift the front thrust camshaft cap straight up to prevent side-loading.

Disconnect the negative cable at the battery.

Remove the camshaft thrust plate bolts with a Torx bit, take off the thrust plate, and carefully pull the camshaft out of the block while rotating it.

Slowly withdraw the camshaft from the engine, being careful not to nick, scrape, or otherwise damage the bearings with the cam lobes.

1. Inspect the bearing journals for uneven wear, pits, and galling. If damaged, both the camshaft and bearings will need to be replaced. 2. Measure the inside diameter of each camshaft bearing using a telescoping gauge and record the results. 3. Measure the camshaft bearing journals with a micrometer to determine if they're excessively worn or out-of-round. If out-of-round, the camshaft should be replaced. 4. Check the camshaft lobes for heat discoloration, score marks, chopped areas, pitting, flaking, and uneven wear. If in good condition, the camshaft can be reused. 5. Ensure the camshaft oil passages are clear and clean.

Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts slowly and by one turn at a time until each cap touches the cylinder head. Then, go around again in the same sequence, tightening the bolts to the specified Stage 1 torque setting. Continue the tightening sequence patterns until all three tightening stages are complete.

a) Clean the bearing surfaces and camshaft journals with lacquer thinner or acetone. b) Carefully lay the camshaft(s) in place in the cylinder head without installing the rocker arms or lash adjusters and without lubrication. c) Lay a strip of Plastigage on each journal. d) Install the camshaft caps. e) Tighten the caps gradually to the specified torque. f) Remove the bolts and detach the caps. g) Compare the width of the crushed Plastigage to the scale on the Plastigage envelope to determine the oil clearance. h) If the clearance is greater than specified and any journal diameter is less than specified, replace the camshaft. If journal diameters are within specifications but oil clearance is too great, the cylinder head is worn and must be replaced.

Wipe off all surplus sealant and follow the sealant manufacturer's instructions for curing time before starting the engine.

Draw off the sprocket with a puller, then remove the belt guide (if equipped).

Inspect the camshaft lobes for heat discoloration, score marks, chipped areas, pitting, and uneven wear.

Unbolt the camshaft sprocket, ensuring that the engine is not turned while doing so.
