Install a new camshaft and repeat the check; if clearance is still excessive, the cylinder head must be replaced.

1. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and cam lobes with engine assembly lube. 2. Slide the camshaft into the engine, supporting it near the block to avoid scraping or nicking the bearings. 3. Coat both sides of the thrust plate with engine assembly lube, then install it so it covers the main oil gallery. Tighten the bolts to the torque.

Slowly withdraw the camshaft from the engine, being careful not to nick, scrape, or otherwise damage the bearings with the cam lobes.

Record the figure for future reference and then reposition the piston at TDC on the compression stroke.

Remove the bearing caps and lift the camshaft off the cylinder head. Don't mix up the camshafts or any of the components. They must all go back to their original locations, and on the same cylinder head they were removed from.

Repeat the procedure for the removal of the other camshaft.

Press down on the plunger using a Phillips screwdriver to ensure it operates freely without binding.

Lubricate the camshaft journals liberally with engine oil and apply engine assembly lube to the cam lobes.

Measure the camshaft bearing journals with a micrometer to determine if they are excessively worn or out-of-round. If they are more than 0.001-inch out-of-round, the camshaft should be replaced with a new one.

Remove the tappets, clean the bearing surfaces carefully, and install the camshafts and bearing caps. Tighten the bearing cap bolts to the specified torque setting, then measure the endplay using a dial indicator mounted on the cylinder head. Tap the camshaft fully towards the gauge, zero the gauge, then tap the camshaft fully away from the gauge and note the reading.

Install the timing belt.

Install the retaining plate and screws.

Ensure that the camshaft oil passages are clear and clean.
