Examine the cam lobes and bearing journals for score marks, pitting, galling, overheating evidence (blue or discolored areas), and flaking of the hardened surface.

Liberally oil the camshaft bearing surfaces, taking care not to get any on the camshaft cap mating surface.

Install the camshaft alignment tool #303-1565, then the phasers and sprockets to the camshafts, tightening the retaining bolts loosely.

Clean the bearing surfaces, lay the camshaft in place without lubrication, use Plastigage, and compare the width of the crushed Plastigage to the scale on the envelope.

54. Lubricate the camshafts and bearing saddles in the cylinder head for the front (left) cylinder bank with clean engine oil or camshaft installation lube. Set the camshafts in the cylinder head, making sure they are in their neutral positions. 55. Lubricate the friction surfaces of the camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil or camshaft installation lube and install them in their proper positions. Install the bolts and tighten them, in sequence, to the torque Specifications. 56. Lubricate the camshafts and bearing saddles in the cylinder head for the rear (right) cylinder bank with clean engine oil or camshaft installation lube. Set the camshafts in the cylinder head, making sure they are in their neutral positions. 57. Lubricate the friction surfaces of the camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil or camshaft installation lube and install them in their proper positions. Install the bolts and tighten them, in sequence, to the torque Specifications. 58. Check and if necessary, adjust the valve clearances. 59. Return the camshafts to their positions, then install the camshaft holding tools. 60. Install the secondary timing chains, VCT actuator, and camshaft sprockets. 61. Turn the crankshaft clockwise 60-degrees until the keyway is in the 11 o'clock position. 62. Install the primary timing chain and timing chain cover.

Loosen then remove the front "mega-cap" mounting bolts and mega-cap first.

Tighten the bolts slowly and by one turn at a time, until each cap touches the cylinder head, then to the specified torque settings.

Use clean engine oil or camshaft installation lube.

1. Remove the valve covers and the timing chain cover. 2. Remove the timing chains and the rocker arms. 3. Measure the thrust clearance (endplay) of the camshaft(s) with a dial indicator. If the clearance is greater than the specified value, replace the camshaft or the cylinder head.

The steps for removing the camshaft include removing the pushrods, valve lifters, timing chain, camshaft sprocket, and possibly the radiator and air conditioning condenser. Then, check the camshaft end play, slide off the balance shaft drive gear, remove the thrust plate bolts, and carefully pull the camshaft out.

After removing the camshafts, clean them with solvent and inspect the bearing journals for uneven wear and pitting.
