Use a dial indicator aligned with the front of the camshaft and pull the camshaft fore and aft using the camshaft sprocket bolt.

It's IMPORTANT to loosen the bearing cap bolts only 1/4-turn at a time, following the reverse of the tightening sequence, until they can be removed by hand.

Remove the engine.

The crankshaft must not be turned, or valve-to-piston interference could result.

15. Remove the VCT assembly from the front end of each camshaft. 16. Hold the flats of the camshaft with a wrench while using a ratchet and socket to remove the VCT mounting bolts. 17. On 5.0L engines, remove the larger camshaft cap first, then loosen and remove the remainder of the bearing cap bolts. 18. On 6.2L engines, loosen and remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the reverse of the tightening sequence. 19. Lift the camshafts out of their bearing saddles and set them aside. 20. Keep the camshafts clean and mark them with paint to indicate left or right and intake or exhaust.

After measuring the cam lobe lift, record the figure for future reference, reposition the piston at TDC on the compression stroke, and repeat the check for each valve, ensuring to work from cylinder to cylinder following the firing order sequence.

Measure the bearing journals with a micrometer and compare them to the specifications to determine if they are excessively worn or out-of-round.
