9. Remove the camshaft sprockets, locking the camshaft in position with a special tool before loosening the sprocket bolt. CAUTION: Don't mix up the sprockets; make an identification mark on each sprocket using paint for correct reassembly. 10. On the right cylinder head, remove the camshaft cap bolts, loosening them only 1/4-turn at a time. 11. On the left cylinder head, repeat the process for the camshaft cap bolts. 12. Remove the caps and lift the camshaft off the cylinder head, tapping lightly if necessary. 13. Don't mix up the camshafts or any components; they must all go back in the same positions. 14. Repeat this procedure for the remaining camshaft.

Clean the lifters with solvent and dry them thoroughly without mixing them up.

Compress the tensioner with a C-clamp, insert two pins to lock it in position, and then remove the tensioner. Repeat for the opposite cylinder head.

Loosen the left camshaft phaser bolt one turn using only hand tools to avoid damage.

Measure the bearing journals with a micrometer to check for excessive wear or out-of-round conditions.

Lobe lift can be obtained by measuring the camshaft lobe height and the base circle; the difference between the two measurements equals lobe lift.

After removing the camshaft, it should be cleaned and inspected for uneven wear, pitting, and evidence of seizure on the bearing journals. The camshaft lobes should also be inspected for heat discoloration, score marks, chipped areas, pitting, and uneven wear.
