This is situated slightly upstream of the exhaust front muffler and consists of a pipe containing a honeycomb-like core of ceramic coated with a catalyst of platinum and palladium to convert the unburned carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water by means of a chemical action. These converters are referred to as Conventional Oxidation Catalysts (COC) or 'two way' catalysts in the sense that they deal with two of the three major emissions of exhaust. Three-Way Catalysts (TWC) on the other hand, control hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). TWC is made up of two converters; a front converter with rhodium and platinum coatings and a rear converter which is of a two-way type, but the two are enclosed within a single shell with a mixing chamber in between. Air which is from the Thermactor system is blown into the mixing chamber for the purposes of oxidation. No special maintenance is required for the converter but lead, fuels, fails, rich mixture in the carburator, improper operation of the Thermactor system or running out of gas can damage it.

The fasteners securing both ends of the catalytic converter should be removed, and then the converter can be lowered from the car.
