Inspect the head for cracks, evidence of coolant leakage, and other damage. If cracks are found, consult an automotive machine shop for repair options.

The valve covers, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, and timing chain cover must be removed.

Change the engine oil and filter, then start the engine and check for oil and coolant leaks.

On V6 engines, the spring seat must be in place before installing the seal. On V8 engines, the seal and spring seat are one-piece. Ensure that replacement parts are the same as the ones removed earlier.

Because specialized tools are necessary for disassembly and inspection, and replacement parts may not be readily available, it may be more economical to buy replacement heads.

Remove the engine and place it on a heavy-duty engine stand.

Make sure the new gaskets are installed on the correct cylinder banks, as they are slightly different and cannot be interchanged. Position the gaskets over the alignment dowels in the engine block.

Ensure the mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and engine block are perfectly clean using a gasket scraper and a solvent like lacquer thinner or acetone.

Loosen the bolts in sequence, 1/4-turn at a time, following the reverse of the tightening sequence.

The first step involves the removal of the intake and exhaust valves and related components, including the rocker arm nuts, pivot balls, and rocker arms from the cylinder head studs.

Run a stiff wire brush through the various holes to remove deposits that may have formed in them.

On all engines, lubricate and install the valves, then install new seals on each of the valve guides. Using a hammer and deep socket, gently tap each seal into place until it's seated on the guide. On V6 models, use a hammer and a seal installer to drive the seal onto the valve guide/head casting boss, ensuring the valve spring seat is in place first. Don't twist or cock the seals during installation or they will not seat properly on the valve stems.
