The cylinder head is made of aluminum and can easily be scratched or gouged, so scrape carefully.

Compress the spring with a valve spring compressor and carefully install the keepers in the stem groove. If necessary, apply a small dab of grease to each keeper to hold it in place. Grease can also help stick each half of the keepers to a screwdriver or similar tool for installation. Slowly release the compressor and ensure the keepers seat properly.

The manufacturer recommends using service tool 303-374 to extract the seals, but a homemade tool can also be made using a nut, a bar, and a roll pin.

Thorough cleaning of the cylinder head and valve components, followed by a detailed inspection, will enable you to decide how much valve service work must be carried out during the engine overhaul.

The valves and related components will already be in place.

Check all disturbed connections for signs of oil or coolant leakage once the engine has been restarted and warmed up to normal operating temperature.

Drop the spring seat or shim(s) over the valve guide and set the valve spring and retainer in place.

If the valve binds in the guide and won't pull through, push it back into the head and deburr the area around the keeper groove with a fine file or whetstone.

Remove the bolt retaining the heater hose to the valve cover.

Take care not to damage the aluminum alloy and ensure that carbon does not enter the oil and water passages.

Remove the alternator, as its mounting bracket is attached to the head. Disconnect the large injection harness multi-plug and the cylinder head temperature wiring plug above the alternator for better access.

Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts using a T55 Torx bit. Do not use an Allen wrench as it may round out the bolt heads. The bolts must be replaced with new ones whenever they are removed, and they should be loosened in several stages.

Install the heads and head bolts, and tighten them in two steps following the sequence shown to the torque.

Apply silicone sealant to the block and cylinder head mating surfaces. Install the intake manifold gasket, then apply silicone sealant to the gasket at the same locations.

Reassembly is the reverse of removal, noting the following points: Install the manifolds with Section 5. Use new gaskets and fasteners. Install the camshafts as described in Section 11, and the timing chain as described in Section 9. Tighten all fasteners to the specified torque, where given, and use new gaskets. Ensure that all hoses and wiring are correctly routed, and that hose clips and wiring connectors are securely installed. Refill the cooling system as described. Change the engine oil and filter. Check all disturbed joints for signs of oil or coolant leakage once the engine has been restarted and warmed-up to normal operating temperature.

Remove the exhaust manifolds.

Cylinder head disassembly involves the removal of the intake and exhaust valves and related components. On V6 engines, it includes removing the rocker arm shaft assemblies, and on four-cylinder engines, it involves removing the camshaft, followers, and lash adjusters.

21. Repeat Steps 17 through 20 for the right-hand cylinder head. 22. Remove the cylinder head bolts, following the reverse of the tightening sequence. 23. Use a pry bar at the corners of the head-to-block mating surface to break the gasket seal. 24. Lift the cylinder head(s) off the engine. 25. Remove the old cylinder head gasket(s). 26. Cylinder head disassembly and inspection procedures are covered in detail in Chapter 2, Part F.

Refer to the appropriate section and remove the intake manifold.

Do not use any kind of gasket sealant material on the head gaskets.
