Ford 4S4Z-6049-AA Cylinder Head Assembly

Install the cam followers and camshaft(s) as outlined in Chapter 2A, 2B, or 2C.

1. Scrape away all traces of old gasket material and sealing compound from the cylinder head. 2. Scrape away the carbon from the combustion chambers and ports, then wash the cylinder head thoroughly with a suitable solvent. 3. Scrape off any heavy carbon deposits that may have formed on the valves, then use a power-operated wire brush to remove deposits from the valve heads and stems.

The intake manifold is secured by seven bolts and a stud and nut at either end. The studs must be unscrewed from the cylinder head to allow the manifold to be moved fully to the rear, clear of the head.

The camshafts and tappets need to be removed.

If you've replaced any dowels, make sure they're completely seated in the block and do not protrude as high as the combined height of the head gasket and the recess in the cylinder head.

Use a valve spring compressor to compress each valve spring until the keepers can be removed. A special valve spring compressor is required to avoid damaging the cam follower bores.
