The next step is to drain the cooling system.

Remove the accessory drive belt, alternator, and air conditioning compressor. Loosen the single nut and four lower bolts that secure the accessory bracket to the engine by four turns each, and remove the bracket's front uppermost bolt.

1. Examine the head of each valve for pitting, burning, cracks, and general wear, and check the valve stem for scoring and wear ridges. 2. Rotate the valve and check for any obvious indication that it is bent. Look for pits and excessive wear on the tip of each valve stem. Replace any valve that shows signs of wear or damage. 3. If the valve appears satisfactory, measure the valve stem diameter at several points using a micrometer. Any significant difference in the readings indicates wear of the valve stem, and the valve(s) must be replaced if conditions are apparent. 4. If the valves are in satisfactory condition, they should be ground (lapped) into their respective seats to ensure a smooth gas-tight seal.

Starting at one end of the head, lubricate and install the first valve. Apply moly-based grease or clean engine oil to the valve stem before installation. If re-using original valves, ensure each is installed in its original guide. If new valves are being installed, insert them into the locations to which they have been ground.

Install the catalytic converter with new gaskets, install the camshafts and timing belt, tighten all fasteners to the specified torque, ensure correct routing of hoses and wiring, refill the cooling system, and check for leaks after restarting the engine.

Drop the spring seat or shim(s) over the valve guide and set the valve spring and retainer in place.

Drain the cooling system. Remove the air cleaner assembly and the air duct. Remove the drive belt.

Carefully inspect each valve face for uneven wear, deformation, cracks, pits, and burned areas. Check the valve stem for scuffing and galling and the neck for cracks.

Install a new head gasket on the cylinder block, noting which side faces up.

21. Repeat Steps 17 through 20 for the right-hand cylinder head. 22. Remove the cylinder head bolts, following the reverse of the tightening sequence. 23. Use a pry bar at the corners of the head-to-block mating surface to break the gasket seal. 24. Lift the cylinder head(s) off the engine. 25. Remove the old cylinder head gasket(s). 26. Remove the ignition coil bracket and dipstick tube.

Remove the accessory bracket and set it aside.

Do not, under any circumstances, shim the springs to the point where the installed height is less than specified.

It may be more practical and economical for the home mechanic to purchase replacement heads due to the specialized tools required for disassembly and inspection procedures, as well as the potential unavailability of replacement parts.

Recover the valve stem oil seals from their locations in the cylinder head, noting any color differences between the intake and exhaust valve seals for installation.

Drain the cooling system, including removing the engine block drain plugs.
