Different model years of the TFI-IV Ignition system require different test procedures. For 1985-87 models, begin by turning the ignition switch off and disconnecting the coil wire; then, ground it. After that, put the negative lead of a volt/ohmmeter to the distributor base and disconnect the pin-in-line connector near it, attaching the positive lead of this device to its TFI module side. Once you turn on your ignition switch and bump starter to measure voltage levels with engine stationary (if lower-replace stator assembly), proceed as follows: for 1988 models do similar steps but adjust voltage thresholds-if highest reading exceeds 70% battery voltage or else replace stator assembly; if lowest value is greater than 0.5 volts inspect stator and TFI terminals; in 1989-90 models use special Rotunda tester tool for TFI modules, ensuring park position (AT) or neutral gear (MT) with wheels blocked-then proceed according to subsequent instructions. Removal / installation involves rotating engine to TDC position-disconnecting negative battery cable-carefully removing distributor assembly (making sure not rotate engine during removal). Installation includes aligning distributor correctly & checking initial timing before completing installation process.
