1. Use a ruler graduated in 1/32-inch increments or a dial caliper. 2. Measure from the top of each spring seat or shim(s) to the bottom of the retainer.

Remove the ground strap and throttle cable bracket.

Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts. The bolts must be replaced with new ones whenever they are removed. Loosen the bolts in several stages.

Confirm that the crankshaft is at TDC. If it is not, rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction until the "TC" mark aligns with the pointer.

Remove the intake and exhaust manifold.

27. The mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and block must be perfectly clean when the heads are installed. 28. Check the engine block and cylinder head mating surfaces for nicks, deep scratches, and other damage. 29. Use a tap of the correct size to chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes. 30. Make sure the new gaskets are on the correct cylinder banks and located on the dowels in the block. 31. Carefully position the cylinder heads on the engine block without disturbing the gaskets.

If the valve binds in the guide and won't pull through, push it back into the head and deburr the area around the keeper groove with a fine file or whetstone.
