Spark plugs are fitted on the sides of the engine and for the 2.3L from 1993 to 1997 and the 2.5L from 1998 through 2001 four-cylinder models, there are eight plugs as each cylinder has two spark plugs. Getting to the spark plugs from the intake manifold side is tight and may call for detachment of the intake system and the use of tools. The manufacturer as usual gives a maximum replace interval for spark plugs depending on the engine model, which is about 60,000 miles for the latest models due to misfiring before the 100,000 mark. A socket late with numerous extensions, a gap gauge, and an optionally plug wire removal tool are required equipment for spark plug replacement. When changing the spark plug wires, apply a silicone dielectric compound inside each boot before reconnecting. Whenever putting in new spark plugs, make sure to inspect and if necessary change spark plug wires. While engine is running in a dark and well-ventilated garage visually check spark plug wires for arcing or sparks. Starting from the number one cylinder spark plug, inspect one wire at a time and mark each as needed for reinstallation. Disconnect and reattach individual wires carefully, ensuring proper fits as well as cleaning them thoroughly. Watch for burns, cracks, and damage by avoiding sharp bends. Each wire should be properly secured on distributor and spark plugs.

Inspect the wires visually while the engine is running in a dark, well-ventilated garage to maintain spark plug wires. Watch out for arcs or sparks that indicate wear and tear on them. One cylinder at a time, examine the wires starting with number one and mark them accordingly. A wire can be disconnected without removing the wire itself by using a removal tool or twisting and pulling the rubber boot. Ensuring a tight fit, push the wire and boot onto the spark plug. The metal connector inside the boot should be crimped when required. Clean the wire with a rag; check for burns, cracks or damage and inspect for corrosion at distributor end and snug fitting. Replace damaged wires with those made for your engine model and replace one at a time so that you do not disturb firing order. Replace 1991 and earlier models' distributor cap and rotor if they are worn out, damaged or cracked or have carbon tracks or worn terminals.

If you want to keep spark plug wires in excellent condition, always replace them when you change spark plugs. While the engine is running, just check for arcs or sparks in a well-ventilated garage. Start checking and labeling them one by one from the number one cylinder. Pull out the rubber boot by twisting it off or use a removal tool to separate wires from spark plugs. Attach the cables again tightly; pliers should be used where required. Clean off any dirt on these wire and examine them for burns, cracks or damages. Take off wires from the distributor, inspect for corrosion, and also replace any broken ones. This may involve putting in place new distributor cap and rotor, looking out for cracks, carbon tracks, worn terminals and corrosion. Apply silicon dielectric compound on single point rotors tip and replace cap and rotor when defects are found on them.

In a well-ventilated garage with poor lighting, watch the wires while the engine is running for any arcing or sparking.
