8. Check the mounting rubbers for damage and deterioration. If they are worn, they may be replaceable separately from the shock absorber body (check the availability of parts). 9. Mount the shock absorber in a vise, gripping it by the lower mounting. Examine it for signs of fluid leakage. Test its operation by moving it through a full stroke and then through short strokes of two to four inches. The resistance should be smooth and continuous; if it is jerky or uneven, the shock absorber should be replaced.

Examine the strut for signs of fluid leakage, check the strut piston rod for signs of pitting along its entire length, and inspect the strut body for signs of damage. Test the operation of the strut by moving the piston through a full stroke and then through short strokes of 2 to 4 inches. The resistance felt should be smooth and continuous; if it is jerky, uneven, or if there are visible signs of wear or damage, replacement is necessary.

Push down on each corner of the vehicle and observe if it returns to a level position within one or two bounces.

The manufacturer advises that all suspension and steering system fasteners that require a specific torque should be replaced with new ones whenever they have been removed. This does not apply to the subframe bolts.
