An oil seal is used to prevent leakage of fluid and to keep dirt and contaminants from entering the transmission.

Position the spider in the driveshaft yoke and partially install one bearing cap in the yoke. If the replacement spider is equipped with a grease fitting, ensure it's offset in the proper direction (toward the driveshaft). Start the spider into the bearing cap and then partially install the other cap. Align the spider and press the bearing caps into position, being careful not to damage the dust seals.

Transfer the sockets to the other side and press the opposite bearing cap out in the same manner.

Problems with the driveshaft(s) are usually indicated by a noise or vibration while driving the vehicle. A road test should verify if the problem is the driveshaft(s) or another vehicle component. Steps include noting the engine speed at which the problem is most evident, testing the vehicle in different gear ranges, and visually inspecting the driveshaft(s) for damage or imbalance.

The driveshaft dust boot seal clamps should be removed.

Use small pliers to remove the universal joint snap-rings.
