    Q:
How is the rear hub/bearing assembly replaced on the 1999 Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
The rear hub/bearing assembly is replaced using the same procedure as for front hub/bearing assemblies. The vehicle is put in gear, the parking brake is applied, and the driveaxle/hubnut is loosened with a socket and large breaker bar. If the vehicle has air suspension, the air suspension system is turned off. The wheel lug nuts are loosened, the vehicle is raised and supported on jackstands, and the wheel is removed. The driveaxle/hub nut is removed, followed by the brake caliper and anchor bracket, and the brake disc. If the vehicle has 4-wheel ABS, the disc splash shield is removed, and the speed sensor is detached from the knuckle. On Expedition/Navigator models with independent rear suspension, the outboard end of the driveaxles is separated from the hub using a puller. The hub assembly-to-steering knuckle bolts are removed, and the hub assembly is tapped from side-to-side to break it loose from the steering knuckle. The hub assembly is then pulled off the end of the driveaxle, and if it is stuck on the splines, a puller is used to free it. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, with the driveaxle splines lubricated with multi-purpose grease and all fasteners tightened. If the hub-to-knuckle interface had an O-ring, a new O-ring is installed upon reassembly.
