Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.

Make certain that the mating surfaces are clean. Note: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, or abrasive wheels to clean mating surfaces as they can easily gouge the surfaces and cause leaks. Check the exhaust manifold for cracks and warpage. If the manifold is warped, an automotive machine shop may be able to resurface it. Install a new exhaust manifold gasket. Use the torque specifications at the beginning for installation. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to the torque.

Remove the intake manifold from the engine.

Disconnect the electrical connectors from the various sensors threaded into the intake manifold. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors and disconnect the fuel lines to the fuel rail.

Carefully inspect the manifold gasket and replace it if necessary, ensure that the mating surfaces are clean, and use the torque specifications at the end of this chapter for installation.

Disconnect the EGR transducer hoses from the EGR valve and remove the EGR valve.

Disconnect the EGR valve vacuum hose and the EVAP canister purge solenoid vacuum hose.

Install the manifold gasket immediately after applying the sealant to ensure proper adhesion.

Disconnect the fuel rails and lines and cap the lines to prevent entry of dirt.

Detach the manifold from the engine.

Relieve the fuel pressure.
