Inspect the exhaust manifold and replace it or have it machined flat if necessary.

Whenever you raise the vehicle to service underbody components, inspect the converter for leaks, corrosion, dents, and other damage. Carefully inspect the welds or flange bolts and nuts that attach the front and rear ends of the converter to the exhaust system. If you note any damage, replace the converter.

The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

A catalytic converter (or catalyst) is an emission control device in the exhaust system that reduces certain pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. There are two types of converters: an oxidation catalyst, which reduces hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), and a reduction catalyst, which reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Catalysts that can reduce all three pollutants are known as "three-way catalysts." The models covered by this manual are equipped with three-way catalysts.

Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and discard the gasket, then disconnect the wiring from the oxygen sensor, remove the heat shield, and remove the six exhaust manifold nuts.

Be careful not to scratch or gouge the gasket surface when removing gasket material, as any damage may cause leaks after reassembly.
