Cut a piece of the appropriate size Plastigage slightly shorter than the width of the connecting rod bearing and lay it in place on the number one connecting rod journal, parallel with the journal axis.

Lubricate the piston and rings with clean engine oil and attach a piston ring compressor to the piston, leaving the skirt protruding about 1/4-inch to guide the piston into the cylinder.

If carbon deposits or cylinder wear have produced ridges, they must be completely removed with a special tool called a ridge reamer before removing the pistons. Follow the manufacturer's instructions provided with the tool.

Measure the piston ring side clearance by laying a new piston ring in each ring groove and slipping a feeler gauge in beside it. Check the clearance at three or four locations around each groove. Be sure to use the correct ring for each groove - they are different. If the side clearance is greater than the specified figure, new pistons will have to be used.

Loosen each of the connecting rod cap nuts 1/2-turn at a time until they can be removed by hand. Remove the number one connecting rod cap and bearing insert, being careful not to drop the bearing insert out of the cap.

Each piston should be carefully inspected for cracks around the skirt, at the pin bosses, and at the ring lands.
