The bearing inserts may be the wrong size, which means different ones will be required. Before deciding that different inserts are needed, make sure that no dirt or oil was between the bearing inserts and the connecting rod or cap when the clearance was measured. Also, recheck the journal diameter. If the Plastigage was wider at one end than the other, the journal may be tapered.

Clean the piston/rod assemblies with solvent and dry them with compressed air (if available). Make sure the oil return holes in the back sides of the ring grooves are clear.

Piston-to-rod clearance is assessed by twisting the piston and rod in opposite directions. Any noticeable play indicates excessive wear that must be corrected, potentially requiring resizing and new pins at an automotive machine shop.

The arrow on top of the piston must face the front of the engine as the pistons are installed.

Slip a short length of plastic or rubber hose over each connecting rod cap bolt to protect the crankshaft journal and cylinder wall as the piston is removed.

If the endplay exceeds the service limit, new connecting rods will be required. If new rods or a new crankshaft are installed, the endplay may fall under the specified minimum, and the rods will have to be machined to restore it.
