The oil pump is available as a complete replacement unit only. No service parts or repair specifications are available from the manufacturer. Unbolt and lower the oil pan. It's not necessary to completely remove the oil pan. Remove the two bolts that attach the oil pump pick-up tube to the oil pump. Remove the timing cover, timing chains, chain guides and crankshaft sprockets. Remove the four oil pump mounting bolts and separate the pump from the block. Prime the oil pump prior to installation. Pour clean oil into the pick-up port and turn the pump by hand. Inspect the 0-ring gasket on the pick-up tube, if damaged replace it. Install the oil pump to the engine and tighten the bolts to the torque. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal procedure. Fill the engine with the correct type and quantity of oil. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Unbolt and lower the oil pan. Remove the oil pick-up tube-to-main bearing cap nut. Remove the oil pump pick-up tube mounting bolts. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and lower the oil pump assembly into the oil pan and lift them both out together. If the pump is faulty, or you suspect that it's faulty, install a new one - do not attempt to repair the original. As complete oil pumps, new or remanufactured, have become more inexpensive, reliable and readily available, service parts for oil pump overhaul/repair have become increasingly difficult and unnecessary to find. Prime the oil pump prior to installation. Pour clean oil into the pick-up and turn the pump shaft by hand. If you separated the pump from the pick-up tube, use a new gasket and tighten the bolts securely when reattaching them. As the pump is reinstalled, fit the oil pump driveshaft into the pump. It must seat all the way. DO NOT try to force it. If it doesn't align, turn the pump slightly and try again. Install the mounting bolts/nut and tighten them.

The first step in the installation process is to fill one of the pump ports with clean engine oil and rotate the pump by hand to prime it.

Make sure the pump driveshaft is mated with the shaft inside the pump.

Install the pump intermediate shaft in the engine block, ensuring the shaft engages the auxiliary shaft gear. Install the pump assembly and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Then, install the oil pan.

Remove the engine from the vehicle (see Part F of this Chapter).

Unbolt and lower the oil pan.

Complete oil pumps, whether new or remanufactured, have become more inexpensive, reliable, and readily available, making service parts for oil pump overhaul/repair increasingly difficult and unnecessary to find.

Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following points: Replace all gaskets with new ones. Torque the oil pump mounting bolts to specification (see Specifications) while using a criss-cross pattern. After installing the engine, refill the crankcase with oil and the cooling system with the proper type and mixture of antifreeze. Be certain to check for any oil warning lights in the instrument panel after the vehicle has been started and idling.

Remove the nut securing the pick-up tube to the engine, then remove the bolts securing the pump to the engine. Remove the pump and pick-up tube as an assembly, then separate them when they're off the engine. The pump intermediate shaft should drop out of the bottom of the distributor shaft as the pump is removed.

Fill the engine with the correct type and quantity of oil.

Remove the bolt retaining the flex coupling to the steering gear. Unbolt the steering gear from the chassis and position it forward and down.

Unbolt and lower the oil pan.

Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and lower the oil pump assembly into the oil pan. Lift them all out together. If the pump is faulty, or you suspect that it's faulty, install a new one - do not attempt to repair the original.

Use a gasket scraper or putty knife to remove all traces of gasket material and sealant from the pan, block, and front cover.

Remove the timing cover, timing chains, chain guides, and crankshaft sprockets.

Be sure to pack the oil pump with petroleum jelly (NOT multi-purpose grease) before installing the cover. It must fill all voids between the gears, cavity, and cover. If this isn't done, the pump may fail to prime when the engine is started. Install a new cover gasket and tighten the bolts to the torque. Use a new pick-up tube gasket and tighten the mounting bolts securely.
