Remove the transmission and the clutch assembly.

Remove the flywheel or driveplate.

Position the seal in the bore with its open end facing IN. Drive the seal in with a seal installer until it is securely seated. Use a socket or piece of pipe the same diameter as the seal if a seal driver isn't available. As a last resort, you may be able to tap the seal into place with a hammer and drift, working around the circumference of the seal and driving it in a little at a time.

Remove the crankshaft pulley (see Steps 1 through 3 above). Carefully pry the oil seal out with a screwdriver.

The remainder of the installation process is the reverse of the removal steps.

At the time of writing, the oil seal and carrier are serviced as an assembly only.

Remove the vibration damper bolt, install a puller, and then remove the vibration damper using the appropriate puller.

Remove the flywheel or drive plate.

Align the keyway in the damper bore with the Woodruff key in the crankshaft nose. Tap it into place with a soft-face hammer or use a large washer and bolt to push it into place.

Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.

The first step in replacing the front oil seal is to remove the crankshaft pulley (see Steps 1 through 3).

Remove the clutch.

Screw in the threaded end of a slide hammer available at most auto parts stores, or an equivalent tool, to pull the seal out.

Start the seal in the recess and install it with tool T82L-6701-A. Alternatively, use a hammer and socket the same diameter as the seal to drive the seal into the bore.

Use a bolt-type puller to pull the pulley from the crankshaft, ensuring an adapter may be needed to prevent damaging the threads in the end of the crankshaft.

Remove the bolts and detach the seal retainer.

Remove the bolts and detach the seal retainer.

For a one-piece seal, remove the transmission, detach the driveplate and rear cover plate, pry out the old seal, clean the crankshaft and seal bore, apply oil and grease to the new seal, and press it into the bore. Reinstall the components.

Inspect the seal bore, crankshaft, and the seal contact surface on the vibration damper for any damage.

Apply a light coat of engine oil or multipurpose grease to the outer edge of the new seal. Lubricate the seal lip with moly-base grease or engine assembly lube.

For engines with the timing chain cover removed, carefully drive the seal out using a punch or screwdriver, clean the bore, and install the new seal with a large socket and hammer.

Install the new seal with the open end facing inward, using a special tool or a large socket and hammer.

Remove the clutch assembly.

Remove the flywheel (Section 15).

Start the engine and check for leaks at the seal-to-cover joint.

Position the new seal with its lip facing IN.

Apply penetrating oil to the seal-to-cover joint and allow it to soak in before attempting to remove the seal.

Install the engine rear cover plate. Attach the flywheel (or driveplate) to the crankshaft.

Coat the outer edge of the new seal with engine oil and install it using a seal driver (available at most auto parts stores). Alternatively, a large socket or piece of pipe can be used to push the new seal in, but use extreme caution to avoid damaging the seal.

Remove the oil pan to gain access to the seal.

Push the seal into position until it's completely seated.

Use tool T82L-6701-A for 4-cylinder engines or T72C-6165 for 6-cylinder engines.
