To remove the rear driveaxle in 2004 and earlier models, follow these steps: a) Block the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. b) Loosen the wheel lug nuts and raise the rear of the vehicle on jackstands. c) Remove the wheel and the driveaxle/hub nut, then remove the coil spring. d) Remove the nut and detach the trailing arm from the lower suspension arm ball joint. e) Pry the trailing arm outward and remove the outer end of the driveaxle from the hub. Do not let the driveaxle hang by the inner CV joint. f) Pry the inner end of the driveaxle out of the differential and remove it from the vehicle.

To remove the intermediate shaft, follow these steps:a) Remove the right side wheel cover or hub cap and break the hub nut loose with a socket and large breaker bar.b) Loosen the wheel lug nuts and raise the vehicle on jackstands.c) Remove the wheel and the driveaxle/hub nut from the axle.d) Swing the knuckle/hub assembly out until the end of the driveaxle is free of the hub. If the driveaxle splines stick in the hub, tap on the end of the driveaxle with a plastic hammer.e) Support the outer end of the driveaxle with a piece of wire to avoid unnecessary strain on the inner CV joint.f) Remove the driveaxle.g) Remove the bearing support nuts and slide the intermediate shaft out of the transaxle. Be careful not to damage the differential seal when pulling the shaft out.h) Check the support bearing for smooth operation by turning the shaft while holding the bearing. If there is any roughness, have a new bearing installed at an automotive machine shop or qualified repair facility.
