Regular checks of the steering linkage and suspension components are crucial for vehicle performance and safety. Park on level ground, turn off the engine, set the parking brake, and check tire pressures. Assess struts by pushing down on each corner of the vehicle and observing if it returns to a level position within one or two bounces. Look for fluid leakage on shock struts and replace both if leakage is present. Inspect the secure mounting and integrity of struts and upper mounts. Mount the shock absorber in a vise, gripping it by the lower mounting. Examine it for signs of fluid leakage. Test its operation by moving it through a full stroke and then through short strokes of two to four inches. The resistance should be smooth and continuous; if it is jerky or uneven, the shock absorber should be replaced.

After removing the retaining nut, withdraw the top mounting, thrust bearing, upper spring seat, and spring, followed by the boot and the bump stop.

After disconnecting the brake hose, remove the nut from the stabilizer bar link and disconnect it from the strut. If the model is equipped with ABS, disconnect the wheel sensor wiring.
