The battery must be in good condition with an appropriate cold-cranking rating, battery terminals and cables must be clean and not corroded, and in extreme cold temperatures, ensure the battery or engine block is warmed before testing.

Remove and discard them.

On early models, the starter relay circuit can be checked by removing the push-on electrical connector from the relay and using a jumper wire to connect the battery positive terminal to the relay main terminal. If the starter motor operates with the jumper wire, the starter relay is functioning correctly, and the problem may be with the ignition switch, Neutral start switch, starter/clutch switch, or starting circuit wiring.

If the starter motor fails to operate despite the starter relay clicking, potential issues may lie with the battery, starter relay contacts, starter solenoid, or starter motor electrical connections.

Disconnect the wiring from the terminals on the starter motor, which are connected to the terminals at the top of the starter.

Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.
