Unscrew the mounting bolts from the starter motor.

The cost of repairs should be checked to determine if it is more economical to obtain a new or exchange starter.

Remove the under vehicle splash shield. Lift the engine cover off the ballstuds and remove it. Remove the battery and battery tray. Remove the shift cable and bracket. Place a drain pan under the engine oil filter and remove the filter. Remove the oil cooler mounting bolt and lower the cooler. Remove the battery cable ground wire nut and cable from the starter mounting stud bolt. Finally, pull back the protective cover from the starter's terminals, remove the nuts, and disconnect the battery cable and the electrical connector from the starter.

The steps to remove the starter motor in four-cylinder models are as follows: 1. Detach the battery cable from the negative terminal. 2. Raise and securely support the vehicle on jackstands. 3. Remove the underbody cover. 4. Disconnect the starter motor solenoid wire nut and starter motor battery cable nut. 5. Disconnect both wires from the starter. 6. Disconnect the ground wire from the starter mounting stud. 7. Remove the mounting stud bolts to take out the starter.

Remove the air filter housing. Also, on models where it would interfere, remove the battery and the battery tray.

Check for battery voltage to the solenoid to determine if it is receiving the correct voltage signal from the ignition switch. Connect a test light or voltmeter to the starter solenoid switched terminal (the small wire) while an assistant turns the ignition switch to the start position. If voltage is not available, check all the fuses and relays in series with the starting system. If voltage is available but the starter motor does not operate, remove the starter from the engine compartment and bench test it.

Drain the cooling system.

The installation of the starter motor in V6 models should be done by reversing the removal process.

Remove the coolant hoses located above the starter motor and position them out of the way.

Do not immediately assume that the starter is causing the problem. First, check the following items: a) Make sure that the battery cable clamps are clean and tight where they connect to the battery. b) Check the condition of the battery cables and replace any defective ones with new parts. c) Test the condition of the battery; if it does not pass all tests, replace it with a new battery. d) Check the starter solenoid wiring and connections. e) Check the starter mounting bolts for tightness. f) Ensure that the shift lever is in PARK or NEUTRAL (for automatic transaxle) or that the clutch pedal is pressed (for manual transaxle). g) Check the adjustment of the Transmission Range (TR) sensor on vehicles with an automatic transaxle. For manual transaxle vehicles, ensure that the Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch is correctly installed. h) Check the operation of the starter relay located in the engine compartment fuse and relay box.
