Q: How to remove and install a starter motor in a Ford Fusion?
A: Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the under vehicle splash shield. Lift the engine cover up and off of the ballstuds, then remove the cover. Remove the battery and Battery Tray. Remove the shift cable and bracket. Remove the starter top bolt; it may be necessary to lift the radiator hose up to access the bolt. Place a drain pan under the engine oil filter then remove the filter. With the filter removed from the oil cooler, remove the oil cooler mounting bolt and lower the cooler, being careful not to damage the oil cooler O-ring. It's not necessary to disconnect the hoses from the oil cooler. Remove the Battery Cable ground wire nut and cable from the starter mounting stud bolt. Pull back the protective cover from the starter's terminals, remove the nuts and disconnect the battery cable and the electrical connector from the starter. Remove the starter mounting stud bolt and lower bolt, then carefully pull the starter out and remove it. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the starter mounting stud bolt and bolts securely. On 1.6L and 2.0L engines, remove the charge air cooler metal pipe fasteners then disconnect the hose clamps and remove the pipe from bottom of the oil pan. Disconnect the starter motor solenoid wire nut and the starter motor battery cable nut and disconnect both wires from the starter. On 2.3L models, pull the wire harness clip off the starter mounting stud, then remove the mounting stud and mounting bolt and remove the starter. On 2.5L models, remove the nut that secures the ground wire to the starter mounting stud and disconnect the ground wire from the stud, then remove the mounting stud and mounting bolt and remove the starter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the starter mounting stud and bolt securely. Remove the battery and the battery tray. Remove the starter motor solenoid wire nut and the starter motor battery cable nut, then disconnect both wires from the starter motor. Remove the starter motor mounting fasteners and remove the starter motor. Installation is the reverse of removal.
