Examine the shock for signs of fluid leakage. Check the piston rod for signs of pitting along its entire length, and check the shock body for signs of damage. Test the operation of the shock, while holding it in an upright position, by moving the piston through a full stroke, then through short strokes of 2 to 4 inches. In both cases, the resistance felt should be smooth and continuous. If the resistance is jerky or uneven, or if there is any visible sign of wear or damage, replacement is necessary.

Tighten the mounting fasteners to the torque. Note: Any rear suspension fasteners should be replaced with new fasteners on assembly and should only be tightened with the hub raised to a height of 15.5 inches from the hub center to the center of the fenderwell.

Push the damper fork onto the bottom of the shock body. Install a new pinch-bolt but do not tighten it at this time.

Inspect the shock absorbers for any fluid leakage, ensuring that any observed fluid leakage is from the shocks and not another source. If leakage is detected, replace the shocks as a set. Also, check for secure mounting and any damage, including the upper mounts. Replace the shocks as a set if damage or wear is evident.
