Q:
How do I remove the transmission on Lincoln Mark VII? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the transmission, start by disconnecting the battery cable and raising the vehicle on jackstands. Drain the transmission fluid and reconnect the oil cooler line fittings while plugging the lines to prevent contamination. Remove the torque converter cover and mark the torque converter's position for reinstallation. Take off the torque converter-to-driveplate nuts by turning the crankshaft in a clockwise direction. Rotate the torque converter to drain the fluid and remove the starter motor, driveshaft, speedometer cable or speed sensor connector, and all electrical connectors from the transmission. Remove any interfering exhaust components and disconnect the TV rod or TV cable, as well as the shift rod or cable from the manual lever and transmission cable bracket. Support the engine and transmission with jacks and safety chains. Remove the mount to transmission extension housing bolts, raise the transmission, and lower the crossmember. Lower the transmission further, remove the upper transmission to engine bolts and stud, and unbolt the lower part of the transmission bellhousing from the engine. Disconnect and plug the transmission fluid cooler lines and remove the transmission dipstick tube. Move the transmission to disengage it from the engine block dowel pins, ensuring the torque converter is detached from the driveplate, and secure the torque converter to the transmission. To install the transmission, ensure the torque converter hub is securely engaged in the pump. Raise the transmission into position, align the torque converter studs with the driveplate holes, and carefully move the transmission forward until the dowel pins and torque converter are engaged. Install the transmission to engine bolts and torque converter nuts. Connect the transmission fluid cooler lines and install the transmission mount and crossmember bolts securely. Remove the jacks supporting the transmission and engine, and install the dipstick tube and oil cooler line fittings. Reinstall the starter motor, connect vacuum hoses if equipped, and connect the shift and TV linkage. Plug in the transmission wire harness connectors and install the torque converter cover and driveshaft. Connect the speedometer cable or speed sensor connector and adjust the shift linkage. Reinstall any removed or disconnected exhaust system components, lower the vehicle, and fill the transmission with the specified fluid. Run the engine and check for fluid leaks.
