    Q:
How to replace parking brake cables on Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the parking brake cables, first, ensure the vehicle's air suspension system is turned off if equipped. Release the parking brake, and if you're working on a rear cable, loosen the rear wheel lug nuts for that side. Raise the vehicle and support it securely with jackstands, then remove the wheel. For the front cable, relieve tension by having an assistant pull down on the cable under the dash while inserting a drill bit into the parking brake pedal assembly's hole; do not remove the pin until the new cable is installed. Under the vehicle, disconnect the rear end of the front cable from the parking brake cable equalizer. On sport utility vehicles, locate the equalizer underneath, disengage the left rear cable from it by squeezing the tangs of the cable ferrule, and trace the left rear cable to the front cable connection in front of the equalizer, removing both cables. Then, detach the front cable from its bracket. Remove various interior components, including the front door scuff plate, cowl side trim panel, and lower instrument panel steering column cover. Remove the retaining screw from the parking brake release handle assembly and route the release handle through the dash opening. Unplug the electrical connector for the parking brake switch at the top of the parking brake pedal assembly, remove the three retaining nuts, and take out the parking brake pedal assembly. Disengage the plug on the front parking brake cable from the parking brake pedal and slide the cable through the pedal bracket. Pry the rubber seal from the front floorpan, and under the vehicle, squeeze the cable ferrule at the bracket forward of the equalizer to remove the front parking brake cable. Installation is the reverse of the removal process. For rear cables on trucks, relieve tension and disengage the equalizer from the rear cables. On sport utility vehicles, disengage the left rear cable from the equalizer and from the front cable/rear cable connector, then disengage the right rear cable from the equalizer. Squeeze the tangs on the parking brake cable ferrule and remove the cable through its bracket. Unclip the rear cable from the frame and, on models with rear drum brakes, remove the brake drum and brake shoe assembly to disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever. Squeeze the cable ferrule's fingers on the backing plate and slide the cable through it. On models with rear disc brakes, squeeze the tangs on the cable ferrule at the caliper anchor plate bracket and disengage the cable from the parking brake lever. Reinstallation follows the reverse of the removal process.
