Apply moly-based engine assembly lubricant before installing the camshaft(s).

Follow the same procedure as for the right side, ensuring to remove the front camshaft bearing cap first on 5.0L engines and loosening the bolts 1/4-turn at a time.

They should be marked with indelible ink so they can be reinstalled in the same position.

Remove the camshaft phaser and sprockets.

8. Turn the crankshaft 1-2/3 turns (clockwise) until the crankshaft keyway is at 11 o'clock. 9. Remove the timing chain for the front cylinder bank. Also, remove the water pump pulley and oil seal retainer from the rear of the exhaust camshaft. 10. Follow Steps 3 through 7 to remove the front (left side) camshafts, rocker arms, and lash adjusters. Loosen the bearing caps on the front camshafts in the reverse of the tightening sequence.

Use special service tool 303-1633 and 303-1633-01 to depress the valve and spring, then lubricate the roller follower with clean engine oil and insert it, making sure the spring clip on the follower clips onto the lash adjuster.

Tighten the fasteners to the specified torque.

Clean them with solvent, then inspect the bearing journals for uneven wear and pitting.

Before starting and running the engine, refill the cooling system, change the oil, and install a new oil filter.

After installing the camshaft and related components, install the lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, timing chain/sprocket, timing chain cover, and valve covers. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal.

4. Remove the camshaft sprockets, locking the camshaft in position with a special tool before loosening the sprocket bolt. CAUTION: Don't mix up the sprockets; make an identification mark on each sprocket using paint for correct reassembly. 5. Mark the camshaft cap clusters with front and rear indications for both the left and right cylinder heads. 6. Loosen the bearing cap bolts only 1/4-turn at a time, following the reverse of the tightening sequence, until they can be removed by hand. 7. Remove the caps and lift the camshaft off the cylinder head, tapping lightly under the camshaft caps if necessary. 8. Repeat this procedure for the remaining camshaft.
