Remove burrs from crankshaft oil holes with stone/file/scraper. Chamfer oil holes to prevent bearing damage. Clean crankshaft with solvent and compressed air. Use brush to clean oil holes and flush with solvent. Rub penny on journals to check for copper embedding. Inspect for wear, scoring, pits, cracks. Magnaflux for hidden cracks. Measure journal diameter with micrometer for taper/out-of-round. Regrind if damaged/worn. Check oil seal journals for wear/damage. Repair or replace if necessary. Examine bearing inserts.

Crankshaft installation is the first step in engine reassembly. The engine is flipped upside down, main bearing caps are removed, and new bearing inserts are placed. The crankshaft is carefully positioned and oil clearance is checked. The caps are installed and torqued in three steps. Grease is applied to the bearing surfaces and the crankshaft is placed back into the block. Crankshaft rotation and endplay are checked. For OHC engines, jack screws are used and the rear main oil seal is installed.

Check the main and connecting rod bearing journals for uneven wear, scoring, pits, and cracks.

The flanged thrust bearing must be installed in the number five bearing saddle on the inline six-cylinder engine and in the number three bearing saddle on V6 and V8 engines.

With the bearing inserts in place in the engine block and main bearing caps, return the caps to their respective locations on the block and tighten the bolts finger tight.

A flanged thrust bearing should be placed in the designated cap and saddle position during crankshaft installation.

Examine the main and rod bearing inserts for any signs of wear or damage.

Gently tap and separate the caps from the engine block, avoiding dropping any bearing inserts.

Return the caps, with bearing inserts in place, to their respective positions on the engine block and tighten the bolts finger-tight.

Clean the crankshaft with solvent and dry it with compressed air if available. Be sure to clean the oil holes with a stiff brush, using a wire or stiff plastic bristle brush to clean the oil passages in the crankshaft, and flush them with solvent.

Push the crankshaft all the way to the rear and zero the dial indicator. Next, pry the crankshaft to the front as far as possible and check the reading on the dial indicator. The distance that it moves is the endplay. If it's greater than the limit, check the crankshaft thrust surfaces for wear. If no wear is evident, new main bearings should correct the endplay.

Rotate the crankshaft a number of times by hand to check for any obvious binding.

Compare the width of the crushed Plastigage on each journal to the scale printed on the Plastigage container to obtain the main bearing oil clearance. Check the Specifications to make sure it's correct.

Check the rest of the crankshaft for cracks and other damage. It should be magnafluxed to reveal hidden cracks, a procedure typically handled by an automotive machine shop.

1. Mount a dial indicator with the stem in line with and just touching one of the crank throws. 2. Push the crankshaft all the way to the rear and zero the dial indicator. 3. Pry the crankshaft to the front as far as possible and note the reading on the dial indicator. The distance that it moves is the endplay. 4. If the endplay is greater than specified, check the crankshaft thrust surfaces for wear. If no wear is evident, a new thrust bearing should correct the endplay. 5. If the endplay is less than the minimum, check the thrust bearing surfaces for deep scratches, burrs, nicks, and dirt.
