    Q:
What Are the Functions and Maintenance Procedures for the Driveshaft and Universal Joint on 2000-2011 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Driveshaft on the other hand is a tube linking the transfer case or the transmission to the rear or front axle with universal joints at both ends so as to allow the power to be transmitted to the wheels in a position that is at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. A long wheelbase model is equipped with two shafts connected with a universal joint and sustained by a bearing. Some of the driveshafts incorporate a splined slip yoke at one end for engagement with the transmission extension housing; others are provided with a slip yoke as part of the driveshaft, to allow for variation in length due to suspension travel. There is an oil seal on the models with the slip yoke at the front for the protection of the component against fluid leaks and contaminants; in case of leakage, the seal should be replaced. Driveshaft assemblies need little or no servicing: most universal joints on vehicles without greasable fittings are permanently sealed and need replacing when worn, whereby the entire assembly has to be pulled out of the vehicle. One should clean the driveshaft and check if there are any damages, and if the balancing weights are still present and screwed tightly, and the driveshaft must be replaced back to the initial position as this will help in balancing. Driveshaft complaints are usually in the form of noise and vibrations while driving and a road test can be used to ascertain whether the driveshaft or other components are at fault. To determine worn universal joints, one has to drive at low speed, apply the brakes and then rev to hear abnormal clunking sound, coast in neutral to hear abnormal driveline sound, and when manually rotating the driveshaft the universal joints must be checked for much play.

    Q:
What is the purpose of a driveshaft and Universal Joint and how does it function in a Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
The driveshaft sends engine power to the rear axle through the transmission. At either end of a driveshaft universal joints are used. Although many U-joints are single-cardan type, some 4WD models have double-cardan U-joints. A slip yoke is located at the front of a rear driveshaft, and it connects to a differential by means of a flange yoke. Front driveshafts on 4WD have a slip yoke on each end. The only time a driveshaft may need attention is when the universal joints wear out and need replacing as they are serviceable items which require little maintenance otherwise. Additionally, the driveshaft should be inspected for damage during service procedure and cleaned of any debris that might be present in order for it to function properly again as well.

    Q:
How to replace single-cardan and double-cardan U-joints on Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace single-cardan U-joints, make sure you have a press or vise and a universal joint service kit. First, take off the driveshaft and use pliers to remove snap-rings from the spider. Then place the driveshaft on a workbench with a vise. Sockets should be used to press bearing caps out of the yoke. Fill new universal joint bearings with grease, and position the spider and caps before pressing them into place; do not forget snap-rings. Dust seals must not be damaged. Add grease and mount the driveshaft. Cardan U-joints should have rings removed and positions marked. Remove bearing caps in the center yoke and driveshaft yoke. Replace the centering ball and dust cover on the companion flange. Disassemble the center yoke and driveshaft yoke, and install new spider bearing in the driveshaft yoke. Insert new caps and seals with grease fitting facing away from the center yoke.
