The mating surfaces should be cleaned and checked for damage. The threads in the head bolt holes should be chased. The new gasket(s) should be positioned over the locating dowels. The head(s) should be carefully positioned on the block and the threads on all bolts should be lightly oiled. The recommended tightening sequence should be followed in two or three steps.

Inspect valve springs for wear, measure their free length, check for squareness, and replace sagged or distorted springs. Also, verify the condition of spring retainers (or rotators) and keepers.

Measure from the top of each spring seat or shim(s) to the bottom of the retainer using a ruler graduated in 1/32-inch increments or a dial caliper.

The parts should be labeled or stored separately to ensure they can be reinstalled in their original locations and in the same valve guides they were removed from.

The ground strap at the rear of the right cylinder head should be removed.

The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal.

It may be more practical and economical because some specialized tools are necessary for the disassembly and inspection procedures, and replacement parts may not be readily available.

Identify the left and right cylinder head gaskets as they are different and cannot be interchanged. Position the new gaskets over the alignment dowels in the block.

Apply moly-base grease to the rocker arm faces and the fulcrums.

Inspect the head very carefully for cracks, evidence of coolant leakage, and other damage. If cracks are found, check with an automotive machine shop concerning repair. If repair isn't possible, a new cylinder head should be obtained.

A small plastic bag with an appropriate label can be used to store the valve train components so they can be kept together and reinstalled in the original position.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and remove the valve cover(s) (Section 4).

Remove the drivebelts and idler pulley bracket.

Use a valve spring compressor to compress the springs and carefully install the keepers in the upper groove. Then, slowly release the compressor and make sure the keepers seat properly.

Loosen the bolts in sequence, 1/4-turn at a time, following the reverse of the tightening sequence.

The manufacturer states that the cylinder head on 2001 and later models cannot be machined in the event of warping. If the cylinder head warpage exceeds 0.001 inch, replace the cylinder head.

A valve spring compressor is used to compress the springs.

Apply moly-base grease to the rocker arm faces and the fulcrums, then install the rocker arms and fulcrums on the cylinder head studs.

Loosen the cylinder head bolts in 1/4-turn increments until they can be removed by hand, working in a reverse pattern of the tightening sequence.

Scrape all traces of old gasket material and sealing compound off the head gasket, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold sealing surfaces, being careful not to gouge the cylinder head. Special gasket removal solvents are available to make this easier.
