First of all, to replace the water pump, you should start by disconnecting the battery followed by draining the cooling system. The air duct is removed, pulley bolts are loosened, and the drivebelt and pulley are taken off. Remove thermostat housing and bolts in reverse order. For a 4.0L engine, take out hoses as well as mounting bolts to separate the pump. However, in the case of V8 engines, remove the mounting bolts and pump. On the other hand, 5.0L engines simply require removal of housing, hose disconnection and surface cleaning before installation of the new part. Ensure that you have got a new pump with a matching serial number. Apply some sealant or lubricate O-rings if necessary. Mount the pump in its place making sure that it is tightly attached but not too much tightened up at once.

If the seal has leaked, it should be very apparent when you inspect for coolant residue or dried coolant tracks around the weep hole(s).

Clean the bolt threads and the threaded holes, removing any corrosion and sealant.
