Before starting the procedure, make sure the engine has cooled down completely. Purchase the recommended transmission fluid, a new filter, and gasket. Do not reuse the old filter or gasket. Gather other necessary tools like jackstands, a drain pan (at least eight quarts capacity), newspapers, and clean rags.

Raise the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands. Remove the transmission fill plug to facilitate quicker fluid drainage. If working on later Expedition/Navigator models, be cautious as the exhaust pipe may be close to the fill plug area, and wear gloves during this step.

To prepare the vehicle for the transmission fluid replacement, follow these steps: Raise the vehicle securely on jackstands. Place a drain pan beneath the transmission pan. Remove the front and side transmission pan mounting bolts. Loosen the rear pan bolts approximately four turns. Carefully pry the transmission pan loose with a screwdriver, allowing the fluid to drain. Be cautious not to damage the pan or transmission gasket surfaces.
